Glossary of terms:

Web2.0: refers to a perceived second generation of web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users. (more info)

Crowdsourcing: a business model in which a company or institution takes a job traditionally performed by a designated agent (usually an employee) and outsources it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call over the Internet. The work is compensated with little or no pay in most cases, however in a few examples the labor is well-compensated. (more)

Folksonomy: A folksonomy is a user generated taxonomy used to categorize and retrieve web content (such as web pages, documents stored online, multimedia etc) using open ended labels called tags. Typically, folksonomies are Internet-based, but their use may occur in other contexts as well (such as our example of describing the presentation I gave) The process of folksonomic tagging is intended to make a body of information increasingly easier to search, discover, and navigate over time. A well-developed folksonomy is ideally accessible as a shared vocabulary that is both originated by, and familiar to, its primary users.

Ubuntu: There are many possible translations in English for ubuntu, including:

  • “Humanity towards others”
  • “I am because we are”
  • “I am what I am because of what we all are”
  • “A person ‘becomes human’ through other persons” (In Zulu: “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu“)
  • “A person is a person because of other persons”

A popular definition of ubuntu is, “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. If you’d like to contribute to this blog, or you have any questions please contact Dave: dave@cerebra.co.za
